Paranormal groups bring cutting-edge gear in their quest to unveil the supernatural.
"We'll be setting up electromagnetic field detectors and night-vision video cameras," said Clint Ferguson, state director of the Office of Paranormal Studies.
Rick Janzen, founder of the Knoxville Paranormal Research Society, said his group normally puts up several cameras and installs tape recorders throughout buildings under scrutiny.
Studies are done around midnight because "most people believe the spirits are most active during the night," Ferguson said.
Both he and Janzen say they're skeptics when it comes to reports of poltergeists.
"I won't believe until a ghost pops up right in front of my face and smacks me," Ferguson said.
But still, he said, "I've witnessed stuff I can't explain."
With paranormal groups promising to pay for their overnight stays at the Alexander Inn, the cash-strapped revitalization group isn't discouraging their interest.

ARTICLE FROM THE OAK RIDGER: NEWSPAPER IN OAK RIDGE, TENNESSEE
Ghost hunters to investigate ‘Guest House’Who you gonna call?
The Alexander Inn, also known as the Guest House, was used by notable figures during the Manhattan Project, as well as regular folks over the years.
Now two paranormal investigation groups want to find out whether any of those visitors ... stayed.
The Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort's board of directors and Executive Director Kate Groover, which purchased the old Alexander Inn, have given permission for two groups to investigate the old building and its grounds. And, in turn, those groups plan to donate to the nonprofit's efforts to restore the Inn to its glory days.
''I think it'll be interesting,'' Groover said, although indicating she's experienced nothing to suggest the place might be haunted. She said stories of the Alexander being haunted are ''all over the Internet.''
Indeed, a simple search on an Internet search engine using the keywords ''Alexander Inn'' and ''ghost'' produces links to sites where people list the Alexander as one of the haunted places in Tennessee, with reports of people hearing someone walking upstairs or on the stairs, and someone on the outside looking through a window.
There are also warnings that people will be prosecuted if they're found inside the Alexander. Kids going inside the vacant, rundown building have been a problem in the past, according to Martin Fischer, ORRE's board president. When presented with the requests to investigate at the Alexander, he said, the board ''laughed'' and agreed to allow them access, but the board also hopes the investigations don't lead to more problems with unauthorized visits.
Groover said no members of the board believe there are any ghosts, but the ORRE has been flooded with groups and individuals wanting to do tours and/or investigations at the Alexander and decided to allow these two groups.
The two groups are the Tennessee Division Office of Paranormal Studies, which is based out of Crossville and Chattanooga, and Secret City Paranormal, headed by area residents Scott McGill and Greg Murr.
In a letter to Groover, Christy Canny, case manager for the Office of Paranormal Studies, states that the first thing its team will do is tour the Alexander Inn and determine the best places to set up equipment, which includes ''a four-camera stationary digital video recorder'' that will be set up in four different areas, as well as night-vision video cameras, infrared light enhancers and flashlights, digital audio recorders, sound amplifiers, digital cameras, infrared temperature guns and several electro-magnetic field detectors.
''We do not participate in any sort of seance or Ouija board activity," states Canny, who is based in Knoxville. ''We are a professional paranormal investigation team and use scientific methods.''
She said after the investigation the team will review the evidence collected, contact the ORRE and inform them of any ''unexplained phenomenon captured.'' Only with the board and Groover's consent would any of this information be posted on the group's website at www.officeofparanormalstudies.com.
''The team is gathering a donation for the ORRE as well, and hope that your goal will be reached to keep the Alexander Inn a part of history and the future,'' she concludes.
Likewise, McGill said his group will also be making a donation to the ORRE for the Inn's restoration. He said in some instances the owners of some such facilities charge paranormal investigative groups because of some financial resources being used, such as hiring someone to open and lock up the buildings, or the use of electricity.
Secret City Paranormal consists of about five members from the Kingston, West Knoxville, and Powell areas. McGill, who lives in Kingston, is a former Oak Ridger and the group meets in Oak Ridge. He said they've been together about a year and a half and done investigations at the old Roane County Courthouse in Kingston, where they recorded "voice phenomenon," Red Boiling Springs and other locations in Tennessee. During the day, he said, the group members work for the Department of Energy, Tennessee Department of Transportation, as a project manager, and as a caretaker for an autistic child.
Living in the Bible Belt, McGill said he knows some people have problems with paranormal groups but he volunteered assurance that "We are all Christian-based investigators ... no Ouija boards or seances," but simply investigations of what might ... or might not be there.
The Office of Paranormal Studies will do its investigation at the end of this month, the Secret City group at the end of July.
